The Last Shadow Gate (Book 1) by Michael W. Garza | Did this middle-grade novel live to my expectations? + GIVEAWAY

It is finally time for a blog tour (Who doesn’t love blog tours?!) of «The Last Shadow Gate: Book 1» by Michael W. Garza and here is what I have for you today!

33376691GoodReads Blurb:

Summer vacation was never supposed to be like this.

It was bad enough Naomi had to be shipped off to her dad’s home for the summer and deal with her half-brother Gavin, but when the siblings are forced to spend their break with their great-grandmother in upstate New York, everything changes. An investigation into the strange disappearance of their great-grandfather forces them to retrace his footsteps. They discover a gateway between worlds and encounter extraordinary creatures in a land where the people are desperate to escape the coming of a shade lord. To survive their adventure, Naomi and Gavin must settle their differences and find the elusive shadow gate that will take them home again.

WHAT I LIKED:

1 – ADVENTURE AND MORE ADVENTURE. This is what middle-grade should be like! Weird creatures, magical words, and tons of adventure and exciting events that will glue your eyes to the pages! I feel like all great middle-grade novels always had these very strong points – for instance «The Chronicles of Narnia», how many adventures did we go through with our main characters?!

2 – INTERESTING CONCEPT AND WORLD BUILDING. There are different worlds, shadow gates, weird and creepy creatures, epic battles and magic! What else would you ask for?? (if I forgot to mention anything and you want it in the book, NOT TO WORRY! IT’S DEFINITELY THERE TOO!).

3 – AGE APPROPRIATE CONVERSATIONS AND EVENTS. We run often enough in middle-grade novels that can slowly drift away from its required audience and introduce some things that will be less age appropriate. This wasn’t a case at all in this particular story! And I feel like if I’d pick this book up around my 11th-14th birthdays I’d enjoy it so much more than now (being an adult is a very boring thing I must tell you).

My rating:

4.5 / 5
