6 Bookish Habits I wish to add to my routine!

The preparation to various read-a-thons – the Reading Rush that takes place this week, and NEWTs Magical read-a-thon during the month of August, made me realize that I needed to set specific time for my reading.

And it’s not that I don’t read, but I fall victim to some bad bookish habits:

  • Instead of picking up a book whenever I have time for it, I wait for that “perfect” moment of relaxation to read, picturing myself seated in a quite room with some candles lit up. And as you probably know, that doesn’t happen every day, or even every week.
  • I refuse to start reading a new book if I haven’t reviewed the previous one. And since I usually don’t reaview my books immediately after finishing them, this denial to read can last for days and sometimes even weeks.
  • Because I usually don’t read during the working week, I put too much pressure on myself to read AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE on the weekend, and avoid making any other plans.

There is probably way more bad habits, and they deserve a separate post. But today I want to focus on the good bookish habits that I would like to add to my everyday life.

1 – READ EVERY DAY

I recently watched a video by Books and Lala where she challenged herself to read 116 pages every day for a month. The reason behind that challenge was to see if changing her routine would improve the reading experience. Her reading routine is very similar to mine, which basically is “read as much as possible during the weekends”. Which can be stressful at times.

Reading an X amount of pages every day that is definitely something I’ll like to try. Maybe this August when the NEWTs read-a-thon take place?

2 – PICK UP BOOKS THAT I ACTUALLY LOVE

This one has been a huge challenge recently and I’m failing miserably at it. To the point when I’m not even sure what genres/tropes/ settings are my favorite anymore. I do have a general idea based on my favorite books from previous years, but this year has been great in terms of favorite books.

We are more than halfway through the year, and I only added five books to my “favorites” shelf on GoodReads. What?!

3 – REVIEW BOOKS AS SOON AS I FINISH THEM

Arrgh! I’ve been struggling with this one for so long! I’m always behind on my reviews and then feel guilty for picking up new books, without writing the review for the previous one. It’s a constant vicious cycle that I need to break.

Usually, this happens when I finish reading the book right before going to sleep and then it takes forever for me to find time to sit down and review it.

4 – DNF BOOKS MORE OFTEN AND EARLIER

I used to be so good about DNFing books! It didn’t really matter to me if it was my own finished copy or an ARC, I would always give the book a fair try, but if I didn’t feel like reading it, or it didn’t appeal to me, I’d DNF, just put it aside and never go back to it. There was no guilt whatsoever!

Recently, I’ve been feeling very pressured to finish every book I start. Which might have contributed to the feeling that reading slump is never too far away. An example of this silly behavior is me tying to read «Miracle Creek» for over two months. I finally finished it, and I still didn’t love it, it never got better than those initial chapters that made me consider to DNF the book.

5 – REMEMBER TO ADD BOOKS TO MY GOODREADS TBR SHELF

It’s a common problem to have too many books on GoodReads TBR shelf. However, I have a very little amount of books there. Because I’ve always had this fear that my TBR would get out of control and be a complete mess, which I tried avoiding by never adding new books on there.

And the way I use it, I only add books I want to purchase, so when I’m shopping online I can open my GoodReads TBR tab and see all the books I’m excited to read in one place. As soon as buy the book I remove it from my GoodReads TBR shelf. But I noticed that I don’t really have that many new books there, so when I’m shopping I need to spend a couple of hours searching for some book recommendations.

6 – READ SEQUELS!

Sometimes I even forget to buy them! Or that they exist at all!

I’ve started so many new series in the past 3-4 years, I don’t even know what series I’ve started reading. That’s why I’m trying to put together a blog post about the book series, to help me bring some control over those into my life!

I don’t know what it is. I love reading the first books in the series, but then I never continue with the rest. Or sometimes I make it to the 2nd, 3rd or 4th books, but wait years to read the final book, even when it’s out! What is wrong with me?

  1. Great post! I’m the same with sequels. I start so many series and then never finish them lol! And definitely I do the whole waiting for the perfect time to read a book 🙈

    1. Thank you, hun 🙂 Just this week I started yet another series! (the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo) I don’t know what it is, but first books in the series are usually so much easier to read than the 2nd or final books. I’m planning to try to finish some series in August, while also participating in NEWTs read-a-thon.

  2. Those three bad habits you listed are ALL things I’m guilty of as well. What I actually love about buddy reading is it forces me to read during the week more, finding time to read when I can. I actually found this to be less stressful and more enjoyable. I do like to review first still though … but what I’ve been doing is writing notes during my read so that I don’t have to write the review right away.

I do need to start reading everyday. I think I’m going to try to do this more in August.

The picking up books that I love thing is something I’ve ACTUALLY been doing this year … much better than last year. It’s helped my love of reading SO MUCH more. This coincides with DNFing … I’ve finally started doing that this year and it’s helped my love of reading much more.

The ONE thing I’m actually good at habit wise is reviewing right away … YAY ME!

    Loved this post!

      1. AWEEEEEEEEE! You’re so sweet!! You have LOTS of great bookish habits as well, my friend! And I don’t know to be frank ha-ha! I usually just work around it. One thing that REALLY helps is I write down some notes either on a sticky note or a memo pad on my phone of things I think about when I’m reading. That way, I can just look at those and that helps me build my review. And it’s just little things, like “great character oriented book” or “inconsistent pacing” … those kinds of things 😀

        1. When reading physical books, I put small cards every 50 pages or so, so when I reach the card I need to stop and write something down.
But I’m struggling with e-books… I need to put post-it notes or smth in my kindle cover, so I always have a pen and paper with me.

        2. Oooooo! That’s so smart! I love that idea!! I should do that but for reading page goals. i find I haven’t been reading enough throughout the week, but I’m very CHALLENGE based. So if I have a certain marker I need to get to, that might help me more.

With eBooks, I used a memo pad on my phone. Ever since school, I’ve CONTINUED this habit of jotting down notes as I read … so that helps me a lot. I don’t need reminders thank gosh because it was drilled into me so much ha-ha!

  3. I definitely have room to work on better bookish habits – I’m definitely bad with trying to wait for the ‘perfect time’ to read. I’m still horrible at DNF-ing books, I can’t remember the last time I did that because I always feel like if I book is that bad I want to write a salty review & I can’t do that if I haven’t given it a fair chance 😂

  4. Good luck with your new habits! I try to read a set amount of pages a day, it really helps with reading (for me). I like reading between 50-100 pages a day. These days I’ve been doing a solid 100 pages somehow. I have no idea how I’m doing it, but I am, haha!
I’ve just started using my TBR on Goodreads, before I would never use it, but it makes it easy to find the actual book when I’m reading them.
I hope these habits help you with your reading! 😀

      1. Bahahaha I’m crying 😭😂 You make me laugh! Hey, I wouldn’t be apposed to you moving, we could plan all sorts of reading parties! 😛
You’re welcome! I’d love to know how your reading habits are going! You should do a check in, in a few months! 🙂

  5. Your list looks a lot like mine, actually 😅 . Although the only thing I’ve always done is write my reviews immediately after reading the book or sometimes the next day. I’m very bad withholding important information, but now I’ve started writing my ideas while I’m reading so I’m more relaxed about it 😊
I’m so excited about the N.E.W.Ts!, I just set my TBR, and I can’t wait. I hope we both get to do a good job with that ❤️

    1. Ive been trying to write the reviews close to finishing the book, but I still have 4 reviews to write of the books I read 2-3 months ago 🤔 I’m slowly getting there. Lol

I’m still working on my Newts TBR, how many books do you need to read for your career? 🙂

      1. I have to read 7 books, so I think I can do it, I want to be a Hogwarts Professor so I hope to do it right *fingers crossed *
And somehow and miraculously I’ve been able to fit in that stack some ARCs as well lol. So I hope August is one of those months to be productive 😊

I wish you all the luck with your N.E.W.Ts, I’m dying to know what you will be reading 💕

  6. This is a great list. I wish I could learn to DNF more often and maybe earlier than I do. I think I can usually tell by 30% if its going to work or not!

    1. But than by 30% you start thinking ‘I’ve gotten that far, surely I can just finish reading it’. DNFing books is so difficult! I only had one DNF this year and very early into the book. I wasn’t feeling it at all. 😁

  7. I actually started DNFing more often this year and it has been going really well! I highly recommend it. I also have to be better about my reviews! The only thing is that I found that when I review right after I read, sometimes my opinion changes after sitting with it for a while. However, if I don’t review right away, I forget things about the story, and more than likely a review never actually happens…so I don’t know where that leaves me.
I do like the idea of reading every day though. I want to try that out at some point, maybe after the craziness that is the summer.

    1. That is also true. Sometimes I’ll finish the book and give it a certain rating, but when I actually start writing the review (a week or so after when everything goes well) I often need to either lower or give it a higher rating.
My goal is to at least write the reviews duiring the same week as I finish the books. So they don’t start to pile up (the worst feeling ever!) lol

  8. I read for one to two hours every day, and when I was in college I’d read on the bus if I didn’t have any other spare time and it just makes me happier. I could never not read during the working week, I’d be miserable!

Plus, maybe you can write down your general thoughts/points for a review after you finish a book even if it’s a night like in a notebook or even a small post-it and that’s probably helpful to reviewing right away after finishing a book… I think? I’m also trying to review books right after I read them and though I’m making progress on most of them, some I haven’t reviewed even though I read them months ago…

I hope you’re making more progress than me!

    1. Your habit of reading 1-2 hours every day is amazing!!! I’ve been trying to get into it and read even 15 mins a day if possible, but still can’t seem to add it to my routine. Usually, my eyes are too tired by the end of the day to read in artificial light, so I just do something else. Also, I can’t read when I’m stressed or nervous, I prefer mindlessly watching YouTube videos instead 😀

  9. This year I started only picking up books that I’m genuinely interested in and my star rating average is 4.3! I’ve rated so many books 4 & 5 stars over the year, and hardly any below a 3! I definitely recommend doing this too!
