Last year there was a similar theme: Books That Give Off Autumn Vibes, so I already shared with you my obsession over yellow books. This week’s TTT [Top Ten Tuesday hosted by Jaine @ThatArtsyReaderGirl] is supposed to be about book covers with fall colors / vibes, but to do something a little bit different from what I did before.
Autumn will always associate with “cozy” for me, but considering that we are in October and Halloween is slowly approaching. Besides, this whole month I promised to share with you tons of Spooky / Witchy / Halloweeny reads. It’s only right that my take on this TTT theme is also centered around Halloween and the spookiest month of the year.
These are 5 books [that promise to be spooky] that I’d love to read!
rules for vanishing by kate alice marshall
In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister–at all costs.
Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her–and who won’t make it out of the woods?…more
the dark descent of elizabeth frankenstein by kiersten white
Elizabeth Lavenza hasn’t had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with bruises from her “caregiver,” and she is on the verge of being thrown into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein, an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything–except a friend.
Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does everything she can to make herself indispensable–and it works… more
in the woods by tana french
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children. He is gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours… more
the hazel wood by melissa albert
Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away-by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”… more
sawkill girsl by claire legrand
Beware of the woods and the dark, dank deep.
He’ll follow you home, and he won’t let you sleep.
Who are the Sawkill Girls?
Marion: the new girl. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Weighed down by tragedy and hungry for love she’s sure she’ll never find.
Zoey: the pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Maybe she’s broken—or maybe everyone else is… more
I chose some very “mild” scary books, but there are also others that might scare me a bit more and are also part of my never-ending TBR pile:
«Burn Our Bodies Down» will definitely be a priority for October (as it was also featured in my October Monthly Goals post). Let me know if I should also prioritize any other book from this list!

Great choices, Alex!
This reminds me that I still have “The Nightcountry” on my nightstand and that this would actually be a great time reading it. “The Graveyard Book” is on my list too!

I’m currently reading Tunnel of Bones, the latest in Victoria Schwab’s MG series and that definitely has spooky vibes. I’m also going to be reading The Devouring Gray next which again has all the spooky vibes. I don’t usually subscribe to different books for different seasons but it’s nice when timing works out that way!

I’d like to hear your thoughts on Pet Semetary (as I haven’t read it yet) as well as The Haunting of Hill House (which I probably won’t read as I’ve watched the Netflix show).

I’ve slowly collected all the books in the Dublin series, but I still haven’t read them! They would probably be perfect to read right now, if only I could find the time. 😉 The Graveyard book is only mildly scary. I read it with my son last year and we both enjoyed it! I read The Haunting of Hill House last autumn before I watched the new adaptation, and it’s a classic haunted house one. Loved the adaptation on Netflix, too. We actually just rewatched it. 😉

I just love this time of year, seeing everyone pick up scary books & seeing so many posts about it. 😋 Theres a bunch on here that are on my tbr too. I should really read some of Stephen King’s books, seeing as I keep accumulating them but never actually read them 😂 (I think I have 6 at this point). Good luck with these books. I hope you’ll love them all!
