August 2020 Monthly Goals | The month of catching up!

I don’t want to sound exactly the same every single month, but WOW! how is it August already??? Time passes so quickly! Usually, August would mean NEWTs Magical Read-a-thon hosted by the one and only G @BookRoast, however, this year due to the multiple comments made by J.K. Rowling about the trans community, G decided to step away from Harry Potter theme. NEWTs will still happen this month, but very low-key, and there won’t be any usual hosting and activities as before.

Considering all of the above, I decided to skip NEWTs this year. Partially because of all the dram around HP author and partially because I just need a month to do some catching up. *thumbs up*

I feel very overwhelmed by the number of books I tried to read in July, so I need to take it easy for a bit, put less pressure on myself and finally finish books I started at the beginning of this year.

There won’t be a fixed TBR pile this time, but I have a couple of goals I still want to achieve. Let’s focus on them instead!

AUGUST MONTHLY GOALS:

1 – Finish books I started earlier this year.
There are three books that I started reading, put down and haven’t picked them back up for a couple of months now: «Americanah» by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; «Girl, Woman, Other» by Bernardine EVaristo, and «The Toll» by Neal Shusterman.
2 – Finish ARCs for August & September.
I have two ARCs that will be coming out in September, which I still need to read – «The Bone Shard Daughter» by Andrea Stewart – a new epic fantasy, and «Just Like You» by Nick Hornby.
3 – Finish 2019 ARCs (maybe?)
This year I’ve been doing very well with my NetGalley ARCs, always reading and reviewing them on time. But I still have 4 ARCs from 2019 that I haven’t read yet… Oops! Every single month I tell myself that I will read them, I will prioritize them, aaand… nothing. Hopefully, August will be THE month to get them off my TBR once and for all!
4 – Read a couple of classics or non-fiction
Even though I graduated from school and university many years ago, August will always be the “preparation month” for the new school year. And more often than not, I would spend most of the month trying to catch up on my summer reading list. This time, I thought I’d try to read a couple of classics or non-fiction books to celebrate my memories of this time of the year.
5 – Read books from my “5-Stars Prediction” list.
At the beginning of this year, I made a post about my 5-star predictions, and so far only read 1 of them. Since this is the month I’ll be catching up on things, might as well throw this goal in here and see if I can read a couple more books from that list.
6 – Join the Literally Dead Book Club.
I’ll be reading «Home Before Dark» by Riley Sager together with the Literally Dead Book Club, hosted by Kayla from BooksandLala!

That’s it for my August goals! Somehow I still ended with 6 goals and almost 15 books on my “tentative” TBR. I’ll see how it goes, but I’m definitely not going to stress if I don’t read even half of them. 😀

What book are you the most excited to read in August? Have you read any of the books I mentioned?

  1. Good luck with your reading! I love that you’re trying to take it easy and still have a TBR with 15 books 😂 I hope you love The Bone Shard Daughter, I’m about half way through and it has been great so far (though somehow very much not what I expected?)

Also kudos to you for goal 3, I also still have 3 2019 ARCs I haven’t read and I feel so bad….but also I have no idea when I’m going to have time to read them.

    1. Thank you 😀 and omg, my TBR has already grown even higher for this month. I just got approved for some of the ARCs on NetGalley. I have no idea how I’ll be able to read all of these books this month, but I can sure try. Lol
I haven’t started the Bone Shard Daughter yet. Good to hear that you’re enjoying it. I’m planning to finish “Girl, Woman, Other” tonight (which I have been reading for over a month now) and start it tomorrow.

  2. Ooh, this looks like a very exciting month for you 😀 Well, at least I’m excited for you! Haha looks like a lot of good books to get under your belt. I started Americanah years ago and maybe because of my mood I just couldn’t get through it so I put it to the side… And still haven’t picked it back up until now. I will eventually though so I’m keen to hear your thoughts on it! Happy reading, Alex 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m excited about it as well. I’m currently reading my 6th book of the month and so far I’ve only picked up books from my actual TBR, which is a huge success 😀 I picked up Americanah in January of this year :O (crazy!) and actually loved what I read but had to put it down because of ARCs and just never picked it back up. Lol
I hope your August is going great so far! ❤

  3. I’m hoping to do a similar thing in August–finish most of the books that I’m currently in the middle of! My next semester of law school starts at the end of the month and I’d rather tie up some bookish loose ends before that begins. Best of luck! 🙂

  4. This sounds very relaxing! My July was similar–packed with Reading Rush books and ARCs. I also know I’ll have to tone down the pressure or end up in a reading slump again. Jane Eyre is a true classic, and while Persuasion wasn’t my favorite of Austen’s, it’s definitely worth the read. Oh gosh. I don’t think I’ve read any of my 5-star predictions. I should probably read a few of those, too. 😉 Enjoy your month!

    1. I hope this month is going well for you! I’ve managed to read 5 of the books on my TBR and hopefully, *fingers crossed* can finish the 6th one tonight. From my 5-star predictions, I want to pick up Recursion by Blake Crouch this month but I honestly don’t know if I’ll have the time for it. 😀

  5. I hope you hit all the goals you’re planning for this month!! I’m planning to take the month to just mood read, I feel like I tried to force myself to read too many books in July and am worried about a slump coming on. Hope you have a lovely August! 🥰

  6. I’ll be participating in the Tome Topple Readathon for the first time and with that I hope I get to some books that have been on my TBR for a while or are long and I have been putting off (although I bought them recently). I will also be attempting to continue working my way through the list of books that I decided I had to read before the end of the year on my mid year freak out tag.
I wish you the best of luck with your goals and that you enjoy your reads!! 🤗✨

  7. Good luck with all your goals! 👍🏼
That’s a really cool idea to read classics or non fiction in August to prepare like you’re going back to school. I like the idea so much I might incorporate that into my September reading!
I hope you have a great reading month! 💞

  8. I’m sure you can catch up with all your goals & enjoy these amazing books!!! ❤️
Believe it or not, you reminded me that I need to read The Toll, I don’t know why I haven’t picked it yet!! I think deep down I’m not ready for the story to end, but OMG, it needs to happen soon. 🥺
Have the most incredible August, love ✨🥰

  9. It sucks all of the drama surrounding Harry Potter now. I really love Harry Potter and it sucks that JKR is such a horrible person. I feel like people will judge you for even liking the series now because of her, which is a shame. I don’t agree with anything she has ever said and I definitely no not like her as a person at all after seeing everything she has said and everything that has come out.

I really hope that I’ll finally read The Toll this month as well. I’m not getting my hopes up since I’m in this reading slump, UGHH. But…fingers crossed. If not this month, then hopefully before the year ends? LOL

Good luck with all of your goals this month! I can’t even do monthly goals right now because of my reading slump. I do have some that I hope to do by the end of the year. I think covid just ruined everything for me. I’m scared to look at the goals I set at the beginning of the year, because I know I probably didn’t stick to any of them.

    1. With JKR… I usually tend to not read twitter, so whenever something like this happens I usually hear about it from someone else. It sucks that G will be moving away from HP in her read-a-thons, but knowing how much work she puts in the read-a-thons, we can for sure expect something amazing. 🙂
I need to read The Toll this month, I’ve been dragging it from one TBR to another for 3 months now… Lol

Thank you so much! I hope you’re having a good month as well ❤

  10. Good luck with your August goals!! I haven’t read any of the books you’ve mentioned, but I’ll keep an eye out for the reviews, because I’m a bit interested in some!! 😛 I don’t actually have a TBR planned for this month (and we’re halfway through anyway hahah) but so far I’ve read The Falling In Love Montage and The Poppy War (which I’m still currently reading and LOVING!!) ❤
