Phew! It’s officially summer in Portugal. The temperature is rising every day, and I still haven’t gone to the beach this summer. I even put it on my to-do list, but there are always more important things to do.
This year, with everything that is happening, I won’t be traveling anywhere. But I really love visiting new places and I still wanted to entertain this idea. So I decided to create a little challenge for myself. I dug through my large TBR pile and found books set in different countries.
1 – In July, I will be traveling through books to 4 different destinations… |
---|
This will be the only TBR and the only reading goal I set to myself this month. I picked out 4 books for each week of July and I’m excited for them to take me to different countries. I think it will be a lot of fun, and I’m so excited to begin!
Every week, I’ll visit one country (i.e. read a book set in that country) and will share my thoughts with you. If any of you would like to join me on this journey, please let me know! 🙂
WEEK 1: WITH THE FIRE ON HIGH BY ELIZABETH ACEVEDO
With her daughter to care for and her abuela to help support, high school senior Emoni Santiago has to make the tough decisions, and do what must be done. The one place she can let her responsibilities go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Still, she knows she doesn’t have enough time for her school’s new culinary arts class, doesn’t have the money for the class’s trip to Spain…
WEEK 2: THE ALCHEMIST BY PAULO COELHO
Paulo Coelho’s enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and soul-stirring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried near the Pyramids…
WEEK 3: THE kite runner by khaled hosseini
The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.
WEEK 4: the song of achilles by madeline miller
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess…
2 – …And participating in The Reading Rush! |
---|
Other than the above 4 books, I will also be participating in the Reading Rush this month that takes place during the week of 20-26 July. I will share my TBR for this read-a-thon later in the month. It will have a lot of short books! 😀
What books are you planning to read in July? Let me know in the comments below!

What a brilliant idea to do your ‘travelling’ through books! I may need to join you and make a little challenge for myself too.

Thank you, hunny ❤ With the Fire on High was amazing! I really want to read more Acevedo now. Have you read Clad When you Land and The Poet X? I don't know which one I should go for first 😀

I haven’t read any of them, love! but I’m dying to read them, they’re in my priority list. I’ll surely be reading Clap When You Land in August 😍✨👏🏻

Thank you so much! 🙂 I used to read Paulo Coelho books when I was in high school (maybe a bit young for his books), so I think it will either be a hit or a miss, but ofc I hope that it will be good. I think it’s one of his popular ones as well!

I love your traveling through books idea since you can’t really travel much right now. I loved With the Fire on High. 🙂

Thank you!!!! Exactly what I thought! Our traveling plans for this year are def canceled now, so this will be perfect. I told my bf that I was going traveling this month without him 😀 He was upset at first, but then he realized I was talking about books and refused to join. Lol

Ahah, thank you ❤ I'm sure it will be fine 😀 I know what Paulo Coelho is like and won't be easily persuaded, besides, it's only 180ish pages long. Lol

I believe my review of the book was simply “lol no” 😂😂😂😂 but I was too curious to read it.

It’s great that you’re “traveling” through books this month! I’m currently reading The Song of Achilles, and I like the writing so far. I’m also gonna be really sad if I don’t love it as much as everyone else :(( And With the Fire On High has been on my TBR since forever! I really hope we’re not disappointed by it!

How did you feel about The Song of Achilles? I finished it last week, and tbh didn’t love as much as Circe. It was good, that’s true. But in my mind, it didn’t even come close to how epic Circe’s story was.

ahh, i didn’t really like it :(( it was just “meh” for me. my reading experience was ruined because i knew achilles and patroclus would die at the end, so i didn’t allow myself to get attached to them 😅 i’m also not an emotional person at all, and i feel like your enjoyment of the book hinges on how much it gives you emotions..

I think this is a wonderful idea! I know at this point you’ve already read a few of these but I’m really excited for when you read The Song of Achilles! It was a really special book to me, one of my favorites forever, that introduced me to the world of greek mythology in modern fiction and it’s just one of my favorite things to read about. AND I HOPE YOU LOVE IT ❤

Thank you!! I’m already on my last book and last destination 🙂 I finished The Song of Achilles last week and to be honest, I liked «Circe» much better. It might be because I read Circe first or maybe because I wasn’t really invested in the Patroclus’ love story 😦
