March 2020 Wrap Up | The month I fought my way out of a reading slump!

The first two weeks of March and the last 10 days of the month feel like they belong in completely different months, times, worlds… Not only because of the COVID and social isolation but just workload and how I’ve been feeling in general (and I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people who went or going through the same thing). To summarize my state of mind in March: (1) reading slump, (2) unable to focus, (3) overwhelmed by daily tasks, and (4) not feeling my usual self.

It’s been a rough time for everyone, and I constantly felt like I was doing too many things at the same time, my mind kept wandering everywhere and I even skipped a couple of weeks of blog posts because I couldn’t find the motivation to write anything, even though I love my blog and all of you, guys.

Just like in February I kept making all these plans and to-do lists (you can check my organization technique here 🙂 ), but I wasn’t focusing on my tasks, so they started to pile up and now I have too many things on my to-do list. But unlike February, I actually had some free time to dedicate to the tasks that I wasted by procrastinating… a lot… Lol

When writing monthly wrap-ups, I usually dedicate a whole section to Highlights, where I talk about all the things I loved, did and achieved, but this month I’m going to skip that part and share with you in my tomorrow’s post what I’ve been doing to (A) fight my way out of the reading slump and (B) to find motivation and get back into my routine.

MONTHLY GOALS CHECK-IN

1 – Monthly TBR.
I didn’t do too bad and was able to catch up during the last 2 weeks of the month, as you will see in my graphs below!
X 2 – My goal to participate in the Cosmerealong is also making its second appearance!.  Nope, I didn’t read «Elantris». The live show was on the 28th of March and I didn’t even pick it up at that point. I was very excited to participate in Brandon Sanderson read-a-long, but this might not be the right time for it. So I won’t be joining it for now.
3 – I had a lot of fun being a part of the new Lala’s book club, so I will be joining them in March as well!
Well… I did try to participate in the book club. March book was «Platform Seven» by Louise Doughty and it was one of the first books I tried to read this month. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it. I didn’t even make it past the first 10%.
X 4 – Try to prepare a bunch of posts in advance!
Didn’t happen either! I planned out all of my posts for March, April and May and was going to write a bunch of them in advance and then… I didn’t. In fact, things were so dire that I skipped two weeks of posting in March. :O Hopefully, I’ll be back on track now.
X 5 – Don’t stress!
Ha! Ha-ha-ha… Yeah, I definitely failed that goal!

MONTHLY READING STATS

At the end of February, I chose 8 books I was going to read this month, and even though I didn’t read all of them I’m still happy to say that I managed to read 5! That’s a huge accomplishment considering all the reading slump shenanigans. And it’s true that out of those 5, I DNF’d 2… but I’m still counting them. 🙂

I love making graphs every single month! It’s my version of a vision board 😍 This month I started tracking a few other thins in my google sheet – the format of the books I read and also if they are standalones or belong in a series (as my goal is to NOT start any new series until I finish the ones I already started).

As you can see from the graphs above, this month I’ve been reading tons of Middle Grade books, because they are the ones that always pull me out of a reading slump. I also listened to most of the books on Scribd (thank you for the free 30 days trial!!) and actually continued reading a few series, instead of starting new ones!

  1. I feel you. This month was a mess of emotions for me. I had all the time in the world but I wasn’t all that motivated and didn’t really want to read all that much either, though I did finish a few books. Hopefully, next month will be better!

Also, I’ve said before that I really wanted to read The Grace Year, but just today I was checking out the audiobook details on the scribd app for my april tbr and it said it was unavailable until april 18th (aka the day after my free 30 days end) and I’m not that upset since I was planning to buy this book when it got cheaper but it makes me really annoyed with this service that this happened (it’s happened with another book as well).

    1. Oh, shucks! I believe that April will be MUCH better! We can get through this stressful time and use it in our benefit (i.e. read tons of books 🙂 ). I’m very excited about my OWLs TBR, so excited that I don’t want to read anything else, lol. Will you participate?

And yes! I saw that happening too. I had two books in the Wayward series in my “Saved” and then somehow they were removed because they would only be available on the 21st of April, the day after my trial runs out. Did they really have to do that…

I’m kinda scared to add books to saved now because they might become unavailable.. 😀

      1. I was going to do owls but honestly I’m still feeling the slump a bit and I’m not very excited about the prompts…

I know! Why claim they’re offering 30 days of free “unlimited” if they’re just going to do that!? This makes me so mad!
(I might remove all my saved books and just make a paper list…)

  2. I LOVE your graphics and your aesthetics and you, you’re fantastic! I think you had a great month and that makes me happy, I hope that your April is even better and you can fullfill all your goals. ❤️✨
As for stress, dont worry, I think we have all been the same, with everything that’s happening in the world is really inevitable.
I send you all my love, darling & Happy Reading 🥰🥰🥰

    1. Aww, you made me tear up! ❤ Thank you so much, honey, for all your kind words! And you're right, everyone in the world is going through the same stress and anxiety right now, and all we can do is stay positive, hope for the best and read tons of books!!!! 😀

      1. Oh haha! I hope you had a lovely Easter Alex! 🙂
I’m glad to hear April is looking up, mine has been up and down. I think the weather has a big effect on that too. The start of April was sunny and nice, now it’s cold and dreary :\

  3. I think you had a great reading month! I’ve been in a terrible slump since the middle of the month, but I’m determined to get past that in April. I think right now it’s all about little goals. And not being too hard on ourselves. There is at least the comfort of knowing we’re all going through the same thing. Stay safe and well, and hopefully April will be better for us all! ❤

    1. Thank you so much 🙂 It turned out to be okay at the end. I feel like the best way for me to get out of a reading slump is to push myself to read. Just pick up as many books as necessary to find the one that grips my attention. I hope you were able to conquer your reading slump and doing well this month! 🙂

  4. Audiobooks have been my lifesaver this month. Also graphic novels. It just seems like March was the month of reading slumps around the community. Glad you are starting to pick back up and feel more of your reading self though! And love love love the graphics.

    1. That’s so true! Everyone’s wrap ups seem to say the same thing “reading slump” or “can’t focus on reading”. But I’ve been doing much better now, and I hope you do too! Audiobooks were amazing to get me into reading again, and while I have that Scribd trila I’m determined to listen to as many as I can. Lol
Thank you so so much ❤

  5. Not being able to focus is such a mood! You’re definitely not alone in that… It’s been proper frustrating. This tail end of March has been a total fail for me 😕 It still looks like you’ve tucked in some good books though, especially considering the slump 😀 I’m so curious to know what you thought about Ruthless Gods!? I’m going to be starting a buddy read for it very soon and I had the same feeling as you about WS so… I’m really curious to see how RG goes down 😂 I hope that the slump sails smoothly away from you in April and that you have an even more awesome month of reading!

    1. Yeah, for sure! People stopped reading and started playing animal crossing instead! *wink wink* Ahah, I’m just jealous that I don’t have a switch. Lol
But I’ve been playing some video games. Neverwinter has been a lot of fun, and I also got myselt the Witcher, but it’s going slower than I want it to. 🙄

Ruthless Gods… oh my… I thought I didn’t like it because of the slump, but I’ve been hearing not very positive feedback on it recently. I hope you’ll still like it though! Looking forward to your review!

  6. Amazing job reading ten books! I am dying to get my hands on Tunnel of Bones. I read City of Ghosts last year and loved it so much. I’ve been waiting on the e-book to go on sale, my library to get it, or I find City of Ghosts hardcover on discount (since I already own the e-book). I don’t wan to buy the physical copy of Tunnel of Bones right now since I don’t own the first one yet. I’m strange, lol.

  7. I also feel like the first and last two weeks of March belong in totally different universes, both globally and personally. It’s crazy how our lives can so much in so little time!! 😭

    1. I just was thinking exactly that! Everything changed so much in just a couple of weeks, and for some people over a couple of days! I hope you’re staying safe, hun! We will get through this just in time for the beach season. 😀

  8. I hope April is treating you better so far & that things don’t feel so overwhelming like they did last month 😔I’m loving the breakdown of your reading month – Scribd is FANTASTIC & even though I generally only get around to listening to 1-2 books a month, I still think it’s worth it, and it’s way cheaper than Audible!

    Happy reading!

    1. Thank you, hun! I’m feeling much MUCH better this month. I finally have my new routine figured out, and I’m actually enjoying less amount of work, and for once can turn off exactly at 6 pm! Scribd has been a total life saver! During my slump, I felt so productive to be able to listen to books while also doing other things (like cleaning 😀 ).
