2020 Reading Challenge | Choose your challenge!

As I was preparing and organizing my reading life for next year, I realized that I don’t really know that many reading challenges, besides the most popular ones. Therefore, to be able to get ready for 2020, I had to equip myself with the complete knowledge of all yearly reading challenges that exist out there.

Of course, I couldn’t keep all of that knowledge just to myself and had to share my findings with you, in hopes that you too will add more reading challenges to this list.

Since this week’s TTT (Top Ten Tuesday) is a Freebie, this is the perfect timing to discuss the yearly challenges and make a list of the ones we find the most appealing!

10 YEARLY READING CHALLENGES

📚 1 – Goodreads Reading Challenge

Let’s start with the most obvious one – the Goodreads Reading Challenge! 2020 will be my 5th year in a row participating in this challenge, and honestly, I can’t imagine my life without it. It doesn’t require any extra effort from my part, and setting my GR goal for next year is usually one of the first things I don on January 1st.

I think I will stick with my usual 50 books for this one, even though I’ve been dreaming to magic number 100 for many years now. But I have to be realistic with myself – 2020 is going to be BUSY!

P.S. What color will the GR challenge be next year?
Leave your guesses in the comments below!

📚 2 – Popsugar Reading Challenge

Another VERY popular reading challenge that everyone knows about – The Popsugar Reading Challenge. Every year I tell myself: “This year I will participate in the Popsugar Reading challenge”, and every year I chicken out.

In my defense, their prompts are not easy! And some of them I have desire to accomplish. But at the same time… I want to be part of the “cool kids” gang and finally be able to say: “Popsugar? Oh, I’ve just completed all of the prompts of their challenge!”

📚 3 – The “20 in 20 Reading Challenge

Yet another reading challenge that is very popular, the “10 in 10”, “15 in 15” and now “20 in 20” is one of those challenges that I find a little bit redundant to participate in. If my goal is to read 50 books in one year, do I really need to participate in the one that only obliges me to read 20?

However, this one has a twist to it! In 2020, you’ll need to read 10 fiction and 10 non-fiction books to complete this challenge! There are also come prompts to make your life more interesting.

📚 4 – Book Riot’s “Read Harder Challenge

Book Riot came up with 24 new prompts to spice up our reading life in 2020. Some of them are really interesting, like Read a doorstopper (over 500 pages) published after 1950, written by a woman or Read an edition of a literary magazine (digital or physical)

If you are looking for something to take you out of your comfort zone, the Book Riot’s challenge might be exactly that! Their prompts are not easy, but so different from anything I’ve seen before.

📚 5 – Around the year in 52 books

This one is even scarier than the Popsugar challenge! There is a prompt for every single week of the year! Of course, I know that reading challenges are supposed to be… well… challenging. But following prompts every single week for one year is a bit too much for me. Anyone who is brave enough to participate in this one, I admire your courage and determination!

📚 6 – Calendar of Crime 2020

Every crime and mystery lover should attempt this reading challenge. It requires you to read at least 12 books, using one of the month specific prompts. But of course, you can challenge yourself and read more books or try to accomplish every single prompt from the calendar :O That would be so cool!

📚 7 – Classic-a-Month Reading Challenge

This was my creation. 🙂 In 2017 I was determined to get back into reading classics. Reading one every week didn’t sound possible, so I decided to read 1 classic every single month. I even created a printable to go along this Challenge. Quite a few people downloaded the printable over the years, so I decided to finally update it for 2020. You can find the link down below.

📚 8 – Diversity Reading Challenge

I’ve seen many people participating in this challenge this year! It amazing that we get so much more diverse books nowadays, and that there are large groups of people who want to promote diversity even more, joining these challenges.

📚 9 – Reading Women Challenge

Just a few weeks ago I discovered this podcast – Reading Women, and it has been so much fun to listen to it! These lovely girls will also run the Reading Women 202 Challenge with 24 prompts to read 24 books written by women. Although, this is one of not many challenges where you can use one book for multiple prompts, as long as it fits them.

📚 10 – Epic Reads Reading Challenge

In 2019 Epic Reads hosted their own Reading Challenge for the first time, and I think they will be doing it again in 2020, however, I couldn’t find any information on it yet. There were 52 prompts, one for each week of the year and they had a cool feature when you could receive a newsletter every week with suggestions for that specific prompt (I love it when the creators try to make our life easier! 🙂 )

I’m sure that I’ve missed many challenges when I was doing my research, so feel free to add/recommend your favorite challenges in the comments down below and I will add them to this list, so next year we all have a handy dandy long list of various reading challenges to choose from!

As for myself, I have been making my reading and blogging plans for next year for a couple of weeks (months??) already. I love planning! 😀 There are some challenges I will 100% participate in, and there are others that I WANT to participate but will have to stay away from, at least next year, and try to prioritize IRL things instead.

What challenges do you find interesting or want to participate in? And what challenges you find too difficult to even try?

  1. Having a huge list of challenges is way too tempting for me, it makes me want to do them all – I love the prep work and the planning, but getting around to the actual reading …

  2. This is such a handy list! I never participate in any reading challenges other than the general Goodreads goal I set. I’m thinking about maybe trying the Popsugar one but I don’t think my chances of completing that are high and I don’t want to stress myself out.

    1. That’s true 😀 So far, I’ve been able to complete my GR challenges early, but there was one year that I was too close to falling behind. I haven’t decided yet on my 2020 reading goals, but I think I’ll keep it simple and only do the GR one. Not sure yet…
Good luck with the “classic-a-month”! 🙂

  3. So many great challenges! As usual, I will partake in the Goodreads Challenge. I’ve tried the POPSUGAR one a few times but never completed them … I always end up having a few on the list that I just don’t want to attempt ha-ha!

I think I might give it a go but not overthink it. If prompts end up fitting into place, then that’s that. It would be neat to try it WITHOUT really planning my read … see how well I do ha-ha!

    1. 2020 Popsugar seems alright, but as you said there are still a few that I don’t want to read… 😀 I thought about trying to make a list of all the books that could potentially fit these prompts, like 3-5 per prompt, but that seems like a lot of work 😀 Ahaha

  4. Wow! I loved this! You are so organized!!!! 😀
Ok, I thought I was the only one who got excited thinking about what the next year’s Goodreads Reading Challenge colour will be. I can’t wait to see it too! 😀
The 20 in 20 sounds rather interesting, I like the aspect of reading 10 fiction (which is obviously the easy part) but the 10 non-fiction sounds like a lot of fun!
I can’t remember who’s blog I saw it on… I’m horrible… but I think they were planning to host a huge reading challenge that focused on reading books we already own, which I may think to participate in!

    1. Ahaha, thank you! I’m organized when it comes to other people’s challenges. Now just need to figure out my own 😀

And Yeah! I think Marta from Mermaid Pages will be participating in it. It’s definitely the challenge I NEED to do at some point to reduce my physical TBR.. Lol

      1. Haha! I’m sure you’ll have it all planned out soon! 😀

I was going to participate in the read your physical books challenge… then when I counted how many I had… I’m like, well it’s not really worth it, I have less than 10 😂

  5. I’ve only participated in the Goodreads challenge the past years. It’s the easiest, as it doesn’t give me any restrictions in what to read. I’m thinking about participating in another challenge next year, as it does make reading fun and keeps me in my reading vibe. Love the list you made!

  6. Love this post! I love seeing different reading challenges even though I hardly participate in them. I actually did this Alphabet Reading challenge for 2019 and completely failed by only reading 3 of the 26 books I chose. I’m so bad at reading challenges. Too much pressure, haha. 😛 But it’s fun to see other people doing them.

    1. Awww, Only 3? 😀 Yeah, I don’t like additional pressure especially when it comes to reading and blogging. I did participate in my own challenge back in 2017 when I created it (classic-a-month) and I did fairly well, I think I read 9 or 10 classics that year.

  7. What a great topic! I participate in the Goodreads Challenge every year, and 2020 will be my third year to participate in the Popsugar Challenge. In fact, they chose a prompt I suggested! Yay! (A book with an upside down image on the cover.) I love that there is a Goodreads group dedicated to the Popsugar Challenge which makes picking books for the prompts so much easier. (There’s a Facebook group too, but I try to stay away from Facebook. ;)) One thing they emphasize is that it’s our challenge so we can tweak it however we want to. I definitely stretch the prompts that are harder, especially if it means I can use a book I already have.

Happy Reading in 2020! My TTT

    1. Thank you so much! And omg 3rd year participating in the Popsugar Challenge??? It looks terrifying tbh 😀 And wow! that’s huge! But.. couldn’t you suggest an easier prompt?! Ahah
Do I even own any books with upside down images? Hmm… I’m going to go through my shelf just for the sake of finding one. 😀

      1. Ha! You’d be surprised how many books have an upside down image. A reflection counts too. A few examples of what others are using: The Outsider by Stephen King, Red Queen, or Winterwood. I love the challenge of hunting for the books to fill the prompts, but I definitely bend the rules if I’m desperate. 😂

  8. I don’t really do reading challenges — aside from Goodreads, which is just a public way of recording what I’ve been doing since 2001 anyway — but it’s fun to browse through them and see how well I ended up doing in them by accident when looking over my previous year’s list. 😛 I’m glad you put these together, since I’d never heard of most of them. Maybe I will try one next year.

    1. I never actually tried to find out if I completed any challenges by accident. I think I might try this with Popsugar 2019 challenge and see how many prompts I naturally finished in 2019 :O Uuh, this is going to be exciting! 😀

  9. Thank you for this list 😛 I’m so behind on EVERYTHING for next year, I have no idea what’s going on. I wanna join the Goodreads Challenge as well. This year, I’ve read a bit more than 60 books so I was aiming for a similar number, but my girlfriend challenged me to read 100. I’m pretty sure that’s impossible for me (I’m slow, and besides, I have so many plans for 2020, it’s going to be busy and hard), but I don’t know if I should try it anyway. I’ve also recently discovered that CW @ The Quiet Pond is organizing a year-long readathon whose goal is to read (hopefully) all the books in your TBR. That would really help me, so I might try it as well! ^^

    1. I’m glad this was helpful! 🙂 Even though my GR challenge says 50 every year, in my head its 100 😀 I WISH I could read 100 books per year.. In 2019 I actually got pretty close, I’m currently reading my 90th book of the year, but I don’t think I’ll be able to read 10 books during the last 7-8 days of the year. And next year is going to be VERY busy for me as well.
Maybe we can try and reach 100 books in 2021? 🙂
