NEWTs Magical Read-a-Thon | My TBR to pass all exams required for Auror’s career!

NEWTs (NASTILY EXHAUSTING WIZARDING TESTS) RULES:

1 – Each subject has three grades: A (Acceptable), E (Exceeded Expectations) and O (Outstanding);
2 – Each A unlocks a possibility to gain an E;
3 – Thus, in order to achieve O (Outstanding) you first must earn an A and an E, in that particular order.
4 – The cross-over or doubling up on reads is not allowed!

In the beginning of this year, I chose Auror as my magical career, dutifully sat the OWLs exams, and now it’s time for the final exams of this year – Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests!

For the Auror career, I need to pass a total of 5 NEWTs with different grades each, which results in a total of 9 books! At first I thought this would be impossible, as I usually read 6-7 books a month, but in July I managed to read 11 books and now I’m feeling much more confident about the upcoming read-a-thon.

O in Defense Against the Dark Arts

A: Book that’s black under the dust jacket – «The Winter of the Witch» by Katherine Arden
E: Gilderoy’s memory charm – (grab a pen!) first book that you remembered just now from your TBR! – «Siege and Storm» by Leigh Bardugo
O: Cornish pixie! Swait it away with a book written by an English author or set in England – «The Book of Dust» by Philip Pullman (It’s massive!)

E in Charms

A: Read a book that you think has a gorgeous cover – «Ruin and Rising» by Leigh Bardugo
E: Read a comic/graphic novel/manga (or book under 150 pages) – «Hostage» by Guy Delisle (this is the only graphic novel I own and it’s over 400 pages long! Hopefully I’ll be able to read it anyway…)

A in Herbology

A: Mandrake! Quick, put your headphones on! Listen to an audiobook (if not – green cover) – «Nyxia Uprising» by Scott Reintgen. (I’m not a fan of audiobooks, so green cover it is!)

E in Potions

A: Pollyjuice potion: read your friend’s favorite book! – «Wundersmith» by Jessica Townsend
E: House ingredient: book with a cover in your Hogwarts house color – «Bursts of Fire» by Susan Forest. (I suddenly have a lot of books with red covers on my TBR!)

A in Transfiguration

A: Read a book with LQBTQA+ representation – «The Rest of Us Just Live Here» by Patrick Ness

That is a lot of books and some of them are fairly long, but hopefully I’ll be able to read all of them and some more in August!

  1. YAS!! I’ve been WAITING for your post on this!

    Oooo … Book of Dust … very nice! I can’t wait to read your review on it. I haven’t read it yet but I plan to eventually. Part of me wants to re-read the trilogy first, but I’m not sure.

    Is it bad that I want The Winter of the Witch just because the cover is stunning??

    Here’s to us both succeeding in our NEWT challenges!

    1. 😀 I’m not sure if the Book of Dust was the wisest choice for the readathon. That book if MASSIVE! But I can do it, I need to believe in myself, and I really feel like reading a lot of fantasy now so might as well take advantage of that.

      The Bear and the Nightingale trilogy has the most stunning book covers. I got the ARCs of 1st and 2nd books, but I had to buy hardcovers because they are just BEAUTIFUL. Besides, this trilogy is so good. Highly recommend! Especially during cold winter evenings.

      Thank you 🙂 We can do it! Will you be posting updated throughout the month?
      I was thinking maybe do quick updated on twitter or instagram, but haven’t decided yet.

      1. It is a hefty size novel … but I have NO doubt that you will finish it! I’ve also been wanting to read fantasy or like historical fantasy novels, which should help with my reading list in August 🙂

        Oooo yes … I actually do want to read them during the winter months … I feel like the vibe would go well. HOPEFULLY I remember ha-ha!

        WE CAN!!! And I don’t know … I was just going to do a beginning and end post. I like the Twitter or Instagram idea but it HONESTLY depends on how much time I have ha-ha!!!

  3. I hope you enjoy the last 2 books in the Grisha trilogy & can’t wait to hear what you think of them 😍 Also keen to hear your thoughts on The Rest of Us Just Live Here – I read it a few years ago & found it just…ok?

    Good luck in the readathon!!

  4. Ohhh you got some excellent books queued up for this readathon! I do hope you’ll enjoy The Rest of Us Just Live Here! It was my first Patrick Ness book and I had a nice time with it. I also have Hostage and am curious to know if you’ll enjoy it. It’ll maybe push me into reading it sooner rather than later. 😀 Happy reading, Alex!

    1. Thank you! I hope I’ll enjoy the Patrick Ness book, but I’m kinda scared that I won’t… ahah.
      Hostage is MASSIVE! I’ve been meaning to read it for almost a year now, and since I don’t own any more graphic novels, I need to read it for that prompt 😀
