June 2019 Wrap Up | Reader problems, shocking events & reading recap!

The first half of the year is officially over! We only have two more months of summer! I feel like every year time starts passing quicker and quicker, which is very scary to think about. So, instead of thinking about scary things, let’s do a quick (or as quick as possible) recap of June and everything that happened last month.

1 – I finally received my 100 Reviews NetGalley badge! I joined Netgalley in 2016. 2017 was the year of ARCs, I read so many NetGalley ARCs that year, it was crazy! This year I’m also back on NetGalley, requesting ARCs (often, too many), reading them as quickly as possible and writing those reviews. (and panicking about all of my undread ARCs, but I can’t just stop requesting them… the NetGalley “request” button is stronger than me!)

The next badge is for 200 Reviews… Maybe in 2021? 😀

2 – It’s been more than a year that an IKEA store opened nearby. I’ve been wanting to get myself one of those white Billy bookshelves since the opening date and it finally happened in June! I actually had to buy two bookshelves because we managed to break the first one as soon as we brought it home. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It was one of those speechless moments when you aren’t sure whether you should laugh or cry 😀

Now I have FOUR bookshelves in my apartment and still not enough space to place all of my books in one row. #READERPROBLEMS

3 – Last month I was also able to read a book in one day! It was a shorter book, only about 200 pages, but I’m still very happy about it. It was «One Word Kill» by Mark Lawrence, the first book in his new YA Sci-Fi trilogy about time travel and a lot of quantum physics.

4 – Mark Lawrence commented on one of my Instagram photos and Blake Crouch liked my tweet!!! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??? WHAT???? I’m still shocked, but very happy!

5 – We went to aquapark for a day! It was so much fun! Here is a photo of me and my cousin enjoying the rides! 😀 My boyfriend got some bad sunburns, I’m still as pale as I was before we went. Everything went according to the plan 👍😉

6 – I’m also noticed that I’ve turned into a neat phreak. My behavior reminds me of my grandma, and I’m not sure that is a good thing… 😀 JK, my grandma is awesome, but still, I need to chill a bit. I spent all month dusting, cleaning, washing, and cooking, trying to put the apartment in a perfect state of cleanliness that is probably impossible with 4 cats and 2 dogs constantly shedding.

Uh! Oh! I baked banana bread with nuts and raisins, and it was DELICIOUS!

7 –  Speaking about pets, with so many of them there is always some sort of emergencies happening. In June we had to rush to the vet because one of my dogs refused to get up or walk. He is alright now, but it was very scary. The vets couldn’t explain what was wrong with him, but luckily he felt fine on the next morning after some pills.

8 – Other things that happened in June:

  • Jenna tagged in me in an amazing Journal Diary post that I’m very excited about!
  • I watched tons of League of Legends! The summer split begun early June and I’ve been having so much fun watching my favorite teams! (usually while writing my blog posts 😀 ).
  • We started watching Big Little Lies! We’ve only seen the first 2 episodes so far. I really like it (not sure about my bf).
  • I’ve been reconsidering my prejudice towards Haruki Murakami books and might give one of them a try. I have a collection of his short stories, maybe I’ll like them more than I expect.
  • June was very busy. I tried my best to stay active on the blog, Instagram and Twitter, but there definitely were some days when I have no time to check the social media at all. Hopefully, July will be a little less busy.

9 – I only managed to complete 2/6 monthly goals:

X 1 – My number one priority for June was to finish three books – «Circe», «Miracle Creek» and «Keeping Lucy».
Unfortunately, I only finished two and still need to read «Miracle Creek»!
X 2 – My second goal was to read ARCs.
And I did read ARCs, but not the ones I mentioned in my June Goals post. Those will be migrating for July and August.
3 – I challenged myself to participate in the “20 Books of Summer” challenge that consists of reading AND reviewing 20 books this summer.
I’m very happy to say that I read a total of 7 books in June and I reviewed them all. Some of the reviews are already up, others will be coming up later this summer.
X 4 – Tackle my long blogging To-Do list.
Nope, didn’t happen. The list just got longer.
5 – Learn how to Twitter.
I was semi-active on Twitter in June, and met a lot of new book bloggers ❤
X 6 – Go to the beach.
I mean… we went to aqua park, does that count??

The books this months weren’t the longest. In fact, three of them were barely more than 200 pages long. So even though it seems like I’ve read a lot, I didn’t. I only read a total of 2107 pages across these seven books. I’m still happy I read, because I’ve been feeling the reading slump creeping up for a couple of months now, so I’m always on the verge of falling into it.

*Fingers Crossed* I’ll be able to read more ARCs in July and review them all to complete my “20 Books of Summer” Challenge!

  1. I want to read One Word Kill! I have it on my Kindle. I’ve been branching out and reading more novellas. It surprises me how much tell a good story within a short period of time. I’m kicking myself for not reading more novellas sooner.

    1. «One Word Kill» is great! You should definitely read it as soon as possible 😀 And then get to the «Limited Wish» as well. The third and final book in this trilogy will be coming in November this year, and I can’t wait!!!! 😀

    1. Thank you ❤
Oh, the pie charts. I love them, but I spend a good 30 minutes trying to figure out how to evenly divide a circle into 10 slices, and then gave up… So if you know of an easy way, PLEASE let me know. Ahaha

And thank you, I'm very excited about my new NetGalley badge. Can you imagine that there are people with 500 reviews badge out there?!?!?!!?

  2. Wow busy month! That’s awesome about the authors! That’s amazing! Sometimes I’ll get a like from an author on my posts on Instagram and every time it makes me feel good.
I’m sorry about the shelf, that sounds like something that would happen to me. I hope everything is good with all your shelves! 😀 Nothing like organizing bookshelves! 😍
The waterpark sounds like it was a lot of fun! 🙂
Good luck with the 20 Books of Summer! That sounds like quite the challenge! Here’s to a happy July! 😀

    1. Thank you, hun ❤ I was so surprised by the authors' interactions on my posts 😀
The shelves are all good now, except that broken shelf that is currently under my bed, and it will probably stay there for many more months….

    1. Thank you 🙂
Ahaha, it was very funny and very sad at the same time. Lol
Basically, my bf was carrying it into the room, and his wrist started to hurt so he wanted to put it down. So he decided to put it on my bed, and the moment it hit the bed it broke in two. The box and everything.

He was probably more upset about it than I was 😀

      1. Oh man, that sucks.
Btw, have you ever read Horrorstor? Since you’ve been to Ikea, you should read it if you haven’t already AND get the edition that looks like an Ikea catalog.
**I’ll never look at Ikea the same again** lol!

  3. That’s awesome that you got your 100 reviews badge on Netgalley. When I first signed up in 2015 I went crazy requesting ARCs, but after a year or so of then I decided to be a little more pickier haha. I am hoping to finish the seven I have and hit my 50 reviews on there LOL. That’s exciting about the new bookshelf! I had my books packed away for over a year and a few months ago I was finally able to buy new Billy bookshelves and unpack them. It was so exciting! That’s awesome that you read seven books! I wish I would have read more in June, but dang reading slump made that impossible and I was only able to read three.

    1. Thank you 🙂 I was soooo happy about my 100 reviews badge, lol. I was trying to convey my excitement over it to my boyfriend, but he was like “so.. you read 100 books, than reviewed them, all for free. they gave you a badge and you’re happy?!” Ahaha

Also, having the books packed for over a year?! I’m dreading the time when we finally move… I want my books on display IMMEDIATELY. I already warned him, that we will need a separate room as an “office”, which will basically be MY library 😀

      1. Does your boyfriend read much? Just curious, because my husband does not read. I got him to read The Hunger Games books and the first two books in the Divergent series but then he never picked up a book again haha. Also kind of why I started a blog, because I had no one to talk to about books and he just doesn’t understand it. Like your boyfriend and your excitement over the Netgalley badge haha. Mine would just be like “cool babe” and that’s it. HAHAH.

A separate room for your “office” AKA library would be amazing. That’s what I currently have and I love it. I actually spend the majority of my time in here haha. It sucked having my books packed away for so long. Hopefully you won’t have to have yours packed away for as long as I did mine when you finally move.

  4. I understand the lack of space problem xD I have three bookshelves on my bedroom (admittedly, they’re quite small) and STILL my books have to be squeezed to fit, even though I moved many books out. And the aquapark sounds so cool, I need to start enjoying my summer holidays haha
I hope your dog is alright, that must have been really scary )):

    1. Ahah, yeah same! I have 3 shelves in the bedroom and one in the living room. The living room one is more for decoration and to house all the older books (like some classics left from my grandparents, or some books in Dutch that noone will ever read, but they are huge and beautiful… lol).

The new Billy shelf does have a little bit of space, because I tried to put things so I could display some books and candles, and what not. And when we just installed it, my older bookcase had one free shelf. But my book order (from my b-day haul) arrived and occupied the entire shelf. Ahaha So now I’m out of shelf space again.

The dog thing was scary, but also strange! My neighbour’s dog had the same symptoms the next day, and then my friend’s dog (who doesn’t live close by) also had the same symptoms and also in June. Not sure what exactly it was, but I’m very glad that he’s okay now. Was so sad to leave him at the vet 😦

When are you coming to Algarve to enjoy the summer holidays??? The weather is amazing! And I still haven’t gone to the beach this year… *facepalm*

      1. wow, that’s so weird! maybe a season thing, seeing how the weather has been changing so much lately?
I’d love to! I only went to Algarve once, when I was 3 years old, so as you can imagine, I don’t remember a single thing, despite the many pictures my parents have haha

        1. I can believe that! I must, but probably not happening soon (not this year at least, even though I’ve been trying to convince my family for a looong time)
