Birthday Bookhaul | Ft. N.K. Jemisin, Mark Lawrence and Patrick Ness!

My birthday was last month and I had some cupons / gift cards to spend on books, so I might have gone a little crazy with my book shopping spree! But there is nothing more satisfying than new books on my shelves.

NEXT IN THE SERIES

«BRIGHT RUIN» (dARK GIFTS #3) by VIC JAMES

Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England’s grandest estate lies a power that could break the world... (more)

This is the third and final book of the Dark Gifts series by Vic James. (very underrated I must say, and I wish there would be more people reading / talking about her books!)
I received the 1st and 2nd books in this trilogy from NetGalley in 2017, and immediately fell in love. There is magic, mind-blowing political intrigue, and a lot of morally grey characters.

«NYXIA UPRISING» (THE NYXIA TRIAD #3) by SCOTT REINTGEN

Emmett Atwater isn’t just leaving Detroit; he’s leaving Earth. Why the Babel Corporation recruited him is a mystery, but the number of zeroes on their contract has him boarding their lightship and hoping to return to Earth with enough money to take care of his family… (more)

Another trilogy I discovered through NetGalley! This is an amazing YA sci-fi, with the first book set on the spaceship where the candidates endure some very difficult challenges. Think about it as the Hunger Games but in space!

«wundersmith: the calling of morrigan crow» (nevermoor #2) by jessica townsend

A cursed girl escapes death and finds herself in a magical world – but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination. Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she’s blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks–and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die… (more)

I read «Nevermoor» earlier this year (haven’t written my review of it yet, even though I’ve been planning to do it for over 4 months now!). But I’m very excited to see the next adventures of Morrigan Crow in the land of Nevermoor!

«the ask and the answer» and «Monsters of men» (chaos walking #1, #2) by patrick ness

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him…(more)

In my previous bookhaul, I featured the 1st book in this series – «The Knife of Never Letting Go», and since I had a couple of cupons to use on books, and books 2 and 3 were on sale, I decided to grab them as well in the hopes that I will binge read them at some point.

Strangely, I don’t really see a lot of people talking about this series. Have you read it? Would you recommend?

NEW FANTASY

«THE TETHERED MAGE» (SWORDS AND FIRE #1) by MELISSA CARUSO

In the Raverran Empire, magic is scarce and those born with power are strictly controlled — taken as children and conscripted into the Falcon Army.

Zaira has lived her life on the streets to avoid this fate, hiding her mage-mark and thieving to survive. But hers is a rare and dangerous magic, one that threatens the entire empire… (more)

«WICKED SAINTS» (SOMETHING DARK AND HOLY #1) by EMILY A. DUNCAN

A girl who can speak to gods must save her people without destroying herself.
A prince in danger must decide who to trust.
A boy with a monstrous secret waits in the wings.
Together, they must assassinate the king and stop the war.

In a centuries-long war where beauty and brutality meet, their three paths entwine in a shadowy world of spilled blood and mysterious saints… (more)

THE BROKEN EARTH TRILOGY by N.K. JEMISIN

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years…(more)

«red sister» and «grey sister»(book of the ancestor #1) by mark lawrence

I was born for killing – the gods made me to ruin.

At the Convent of Sweet Mercy young girls are raised to be killers. In a few the old bloods show, gifting talents rarely seen since the tribes beached their ships on Abeth. Sweet Mercy hones its novices’ skills to deadly effect: it takes ten years to educate a Red Sister in the ways of blade and fist… (more)

NEW FICTION

«LIFE AFTER LIFE» by KATE ATKINSON

What if you had the chance to live your life again and again, until you finally got it right?

During a snowstorm in England in 1910, a baby is born and dies before she can take her first breath.

During a snowstorm in England in 1910, the same baby is born and lives to tell the tale…(more)

«normal people» by sally rooney

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years…(more)

«the dreamers» by karen thompson walker

One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep—and doesn’t wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. When a second girl falls asleep, and then a third…(more)

This is my third bookhaul this year, which is insane as I used to buy maximum 10 books per year (and not per month, as I do it now…). You can check my other bookhauls here:

  1. WOW, look at you making out with all of these delightful-looking books! I’ll admit, I’ve only read one: Wicked Saints. It started out rough for me, but about halfway, I started to become really invested and loving it. It was a four-star read for me! I hope you read it and love it too! (Also, happy belated birthday! 🎂)
