Gilded Cage by Vic James | Can it compete with Divergent Series?

This reading year started particularly well. And one of the reasons had been «Gilded Cage» by Vic James!

I love a good Dystopian novel. Last year around the same time was when I binge read all three books of the Divergent series and it was AMAZING. And this year the pattern repeated itself! It was replaced by Vic James’ new series and it was so SO MUCH BETTER than I expected or even hoped for it to be!

I have a tendency to start “fan girling” over the books I adore and I am not going to apologize for it! Because if I don’t scream from the top of the buildings how AWESOME this book was, how do I get ALL OF YOU TO READ IT IMMEDIATELY?! Exactly! You need to hear me nagging about it over and over again!

30258320Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England’s grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.

A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.

Abi is a servant to England’s most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family’s secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?

A boy dreams of revolution.

Abi’s brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.

And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.

He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

By now you probably noticed how much I love lists, bullet points and more lists, so without further ado, here is a list of all the positive things I discovered while reading this book.

WHAT I LIKED:

1 – THE PLOT. First of all, OMG how good is the plot?! Set in the world dominated by “Equals”, wielders of magic and power, while slavery was never abolished and now all the commoners have to “serve” their years in slavery to earn a better position in the society. Tell me, how unique and different this story is?!

I am always fascinated by the worlds authors create and their imagination that never rests! And also tiny bit jealous (alright! maybe a LOT jealous but noone needs to know that!)

2 – THE CHARACTERS! All of them! I can’t just pick one. And that means A LOT. Of course I didn’t like all of them, quite the opposite actually. Some of them I hate with every fiber of my being ( ←- cliché saying right there). But the power of persuasion that Vic James has makes us love them and hate them, makes us cry and laugh with them (sometimes at them too) – that’s what’s so great about this novel.

3 ACTION PACKED PAGE TURNER I didn’t actually read a physical copy of the book, only an e-book but the “page-turner” statement is still true. (e-book just has smaller and shorter pages – meaning I turned them EVEN QUICKER!) But seriously, from love to rebellion to demonstration of true power, this book had EVERYTHING AND A LITTLE BIT MORE.

4 – It doesn’t happen very often, but the next two books in the series are already on my to-read list on GoodReads because I CANNOT WAIT ANY LONGER (and I need to wait at least 6 more month… I need help… I need to deal with this addiction somehow…)

My Rating:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/ 5

I received this book from NetGalley and Pan Macmillan Publisher for an honest review and I’ve been so lucky to get the titles that I absolutely adore (Great book picking skill also). At least last 4 or 5 titles were amazing and instantly made it into my top favourite list.

Let me know in the comments down below if you read this book or if you are just starting it! I would love to hear your opinions!

With love,

Alex

  1. Great review for this book Alex. 😀 Gilded Cage was a book I wasn’t sure what to expect from but it turned out to be a story I absolutely loved. I was completely blown away by pretty much every aspect of this book, although I’ll admit to not being much of a fan of the romance between Abi and Jenner, but oh I loved Luke and his story the most. The ending was intense though wasn’t it? I’m the same because now I want the second book to find out what happens to everyone and it feels like too long a way!

    1. Romance isn’t my thing either, I was more interested in rebellion and magic and power. The ending was crazy, I mean nothing we have expected! I am glad that the next book is only 6 months ish away otherwise I don’t know how I would survive 😀
